Global firms focus on tech innovation with launches
Two global law firms have ramped up their focus on innovation and technology.
Clifford Chance has launched a technology group with 400 lawyers focused on client demand for advice on tech and the use of data. The lawyers come from across the firm’s practices.
The timely launch comes just months before the European Union’s tough new data protection law comes into force. The firm is also aiming to be a leader in advising on the fast-growing fintech sector.
Meanwhile, Clyde & Co has announced the launch of a data analytics lab.
The new venture builds on its relationship with University College London and will help the firm to accelerate product development in 2018.
Partner Steve Wing is leading the lab, along with the firm’s Innovation Board. It will bring together legal, data science and strategy staff, and computer science students from the University.
"Because much of our knowledge is stored as data, having a data analytics lab provides us with another mechanism for unlocking insight, value and solutions for our clients,” explained Wing.
Former Victoria premier joins Maurice Blackburn
Social justice law firm Maurice Blackburn will be adding a former premier to its board in 2018.
Victoria’s 44th Premier the Honourable Steve Bracks AC becomes a non-executive director from 1st February 2018, adding unique legal and policy insight to the firm.
“I remain deeply proud that that as Premier of Victoria, my Government returned common law rights to injured workers,” Mr Bracks said. “A commitment to justice for all Australians is something that has always been very important to me, and my role with Maurice Blackburn will allow me to continue to play a key role in protecting the rights of working people.”
Gibson Dunn partner appointed global GC for Heinz, Wattie’s
The prolific food manufacturer behind the Heinz and Wattie’s brands has appointed a new global general counsel and corporate secretary.
US-headquartered Kraft Heinz has announced that Gibson Dunn partner Rashida La Lande will take up her new role in January, bringing 18 years of experience representing companies and private equity sponsors in the consumer products, retail, financial services, and technology industries.
At Gibson Dunn, La Lande’s practice includes mergers and acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, private equity deals, and joint ventures.
The Heinz brand is the firm’s best-known in most jurisdictions worldwide but the firm is also home to Original Juice Co., Greenseas, Cats Prefer Chef and Nutri+Plus.
Rashida La Lande
