An Auckland lawyer has outsmarted his opponents to take out the King in the Ring crown.

Twenty-seven-year-old Victor ‘Slick’ Mechkov won the belt and $10,000 at ABS Stadium on Saturday night, becoming the first New Zealand king at 75kgs.

“It was a hard road to the final, but I got there in the end,” Mechkov said, telling the crowd he’d be spending the cash on jewellery for his girlfriend.

He added that his opponent, Hayden ‘Tat North’ Todd, fought well.

“I went in with the goal of winning the first fight and working hard in the rest, and that’s exactly what I did,” Todd said.

King in the Ring brings together the top eight fighters in New Zealand, using a range of techniques from different martial arts.

“King in the Ring did not fail to disappoint,” said six-time world champion Jason Suttie.

“True fight fans got to see their favourite athletes, and we’ll do it all again in Wellington later this year.”
