    It's horrible to think this sort of thing takes place in a country like New Zealand. Also strange that mainstream media aren't picking up on it?

    Yes it is horrible, and sad that the media (not to mention the government) have not properly taken up this issue. Unfortunately New Zealand is not unique in this - similar situations involving the abuse of vulnerable crew members working on fishing boats have arisen in jurisdictions around the world. Slave Free Seas is an NGO working to combat this form of human trafficking both in New Zealand and around the world - there's a lot more information available on our website
